ALACHUA – A 61-year-old woman was found dead March 19, 2026, on a property in northwest Alachua County in an incident authorities say may have involved dogs, according to the Alachua Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 7:02 p.m. to the 10000 block of Northwest County Road 235 after receiving a report of a possible death. When first responders arrived, they located the woman unresponsive on the ground near a gate on the property.

Authorities said the woman was found in close proximity to a fenced area where two dogs had been secured. She had lacerations on her arm that appeared consistent with injuries caused by a dog, according to preliminary information released by police.

Alachua County Fire Rescue responded and pronounced the woman dead at about 7:10 p.m.

Investigators said the incident occurred on property belonging to family members. The woman was identified as a visiting relative who had been babysitting a young child at the residence. Family members returned to the property and discovered her unresponsive in the yard. The child was found nearby and was not injured.

Officers secured the scene and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Preliminary findings indicate the incident may have involved two dogs located on the property.

Alachua County Animal Resources responded and took custody of the animals. Officials identified the dogs as American Bullies.

Detectives with the Alachua Police Department and representatives from the Medical Examiner’s Office responded to process the scene.

Authorities said the cause of death has not yet been determined and remains pending the results of an autopsy.

No additional details have been released as the investigation continues.
