ALACHUA ‒ Youth athletes and their families filled local fields with energy and anticipation this past weekend as the City of Alachua hosted opening events for Babe Ruth Baseball, softball and Recreation/Academy soccer, marking the start of the spring sports season.

The annual kickoff brought together players, coaches and supporters for a day that blended competition with community celebration, signaling the months of games, practices and teamwork ahead.

Organizers said the start of the season reflects more than just a return to play. For many families, it marks a continuation of longstanding traditions that emphasize sportsmanship, skill development and community connection across generations of local athletes.

As part of the festivities, several individuals were recognized for their contributions to youth athletics in the Alachua area.

Jason Sweat received the 2026 Santa Fe Babe Ruth Hal Brady Award. Sweat previously served as president from 2016 to 2018 and continues to support local leagues and youth programs.

Gene Findley was recognized for more than 20 years of dedication to the Santa Fe High School Lady Raiders softball program and the Santa Fe Babe Ruth Softball League.

Paul Buckner was honored for four decades of service at the national, regional, state and local levels of Babe Ruth organizations. In recognition of his contributions, a section of the field berm was named “Buckner’s Berm.”

The event also marked the 40th annual Santa Fe Babe Ruth Jamboree, with longtime master of ceremonies Hal Brady returning to guide the program, reinforcing the event’s deep roots in the community.

With clear skies and strong turnout, the opening weekend highlighted the role youth sports continue to play in bringing residents together while providing opportunities for young athletes to grow both on and off the field.

City officials and organizers expect participation to remain strong throughout the spring season as teams compete across baseball, softball and soccer programs.
