ALACHUA – A potentially dangerous overnight hazard in a local parking lot was quickly resolved through coordinated efforts between the Alachua Police Department and City of Alachua Public Works.

Officers responded late Saturday, March 22, 2026, after discovering that a heavy storm drain cover estimated to weigh about 300 pounds had been removed and left at the bottom of a roughly 10-foot-deep opening in the middle of a parking area. Authorities said the cover had been taken off by a group attempting to retrieve lost keys but was not replaced, leaving the hole exposed and unsecured.

Police said the situation posed a serious risk to both pedestrians and drivers, particularly given the limited visibility during overnight hours.

With limited staffing and equipment available at the time, the Alachua Police Department requested assistance from Public Works. Crews responded with a grapple truck, which was used to safely lift the drain cover from the bottom of the opening and return it to its proper position.

Officials said the quick response prevented what could have resulted in serious injury or significant vehicle damage.

The incident highlights the importance of properly securing potentially hazardous conditions and reporting issues when they occur, particularly in public areas.

City officials credited the coordinated response between departments for resolving the situation efficiently and restoring safety to the area.
