Christmas – a time for giving

Turkey_Giveaway_DSCF6739_2  Alachua’s Hathcock Community Center was a hub of activity last week as volunteers gathered donated food items for Christmas baskets for area families.

ALACHUA – Christmas was a little brighter for some area families this year.  Local businesses, organizations and the federal government teamed up to bring a festive holiday dinner to families in need.  On Tuesday, Dec. 20, Christmas dinner baskets complete with a turkey and all the trimmings were handed out by volunteers from the local Wal-Mart distribution center and seniors from Alachua’s Hathcock Community Center.  Nearly 200 baskets were given out, each containing a turkey, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and a fruit pie.

Groups offering donations and support included Wal-Mart Distribution Center #7035, Santa Fe Kiwanis Club, Gainesville Harvest, Bread of the Mighty Food Bank, USDA, Hitchcock’s Markets of Alachua, Publix of Gainesville, Pizza Hut of Alachua and North Florida Regional Hospital as well as donations from area residents.
